چکیده

Flash analog-to-digital converters, also known as parallel ADCs, are the fastest way to convert an analog signal to a digital signal. Flash ADCs are ideal for applications requiring very large bandwidth, but they consume more power than other ADC architectures and are generally limited to 8-bit resolution. This tutorial will discuss flash converters and compare them with other converter types. Introduction Flash analog-to-digital converters, also known as parallel ADCs, are the fastest way to convert an analog signal to a digital signal. Flash ADCs are suitable for applications requiring very large bandwidths. However, these converters consume considerable power, have relatively low resolution, and can be quite expensive. This limits them to high-frequency applications that typically cannot be addressed any other way. Typical examples include data acquisition, satellite communication, radar processing, sampling oscilloscopes, and high-density disk drives. This tutorial will discuss flash converters and compare them with other converter types. Architectural details Flash ADCs are made by cascading high-speed comparators. Figure 1 shows a typical flash ADC block diagram. For an N-bit converter, the circuit employs 2N-1 comparators. A resistive-divider with 2N resistors provides the reference voltage. The reference voltage for each comparator is one least significant bit (LSB) greater than the reference voltage for the comparator immediately below it. Each comparator produces a 1 when its analog input voltage is higher than the reference voltage applied to it. Otherwise, the comparator output is 0. Thus, if the analog input is between VX4 and VX5, comparators X1 through X4 produce 1s and the remaining comparators produce 0s. The point where the code changes from ones to zeros is the point at which the input signal becomes smaller than the respective comparator reference-voltage levels.

High-Speed and Low-Power Flash ADCs Encoder

This paper presents a high-speed, low-power and low area encoder for implementation of flash ADCs. Key technique for design of this encoder is performed by convert the conventional 1-of-N thermometer code to 2-of-M codes (M = ¾ N). The proposed encoder is composed from two-stage; in the first stage, thermometer code are converted to 2-of-M codes by used 2-input AND and 4-i...

Spatial Filtering in Flash A/D Converters

Averaging networks suppress the random mismatch between the comparators in flash A/D converters (ADCs), but an analytical understanding does not exist, nor a method for optimal design. This paper unifies various forms of offset averaging and derives the optimum by treating the averaging network as a spatial filter. At the optimum, the offsets in terms of LSB are minimized with almost no loss in...

Fat Tree Encoder Design for Ultra-high Speed Flash A/d Converters

The thermometer code-to-binary code encoder has become the bottleneck of the ultra-high speed flash ADCs. In this paper, the authors presented the fat tree thermometer codeto-binary code encoder that is highly suitable for the ultrahigh speed flash ADCs. The simulation and the implementation results show that the fat tree encoder outperforms the commonly used ROM encoder in terms of speed and p...

Design of CMOS Comparators for FLASH ADC

The analog to digital converters is the key components in modern electronic systems. As the digital signal processing industry grows the ADC design becomes more and more challenging for researchers. In these days an ADC becomes a part of the system on chip instead of standalone circuit for data converters. This increases the requirements on ADC design concerning for example speed, power, area, ...

Digital wireless communication applications such as UWB and WPAN necessitate low-power high-speed ADCs to convert RF/IF signals into digital form for subsequent baseband processing. Considering latency and conversion speed, flash ADCs are often the most preferred option. Generally, flash ADCs suffer from high power consumption and large area overhead. On the contrary, SAR ADCs have low power di...
